Benchmark Your Energy

Benchmarking is a powerful tool that helps us compare our best performance to others or even to ourselves. In business, examining year over year results provides a comparison of how the organization is doing (good or bad) and sets the stage for finding new ways to grow.

Today could be a good day to benchmark your own energy performance for the first two days of the week. Are you getting done what you've hoped to accomplish so far this week? And do you have the energy and stamina to take you through the rest of the week.

Maximizing our energy management is a great way to get more done at work and retain energy for family and fun. Here are some tips to try out:

  • Identify the time of day when your energy is best focused. Is it in the morning or evening or in between? Work your most important projects during that time frame.
  • Get up and walk around. Research shows that varying activities not only stimulates your body but also gives your brain a chance to "reboot" thought processes.
  • Our daytime biological rhythms (known as the Ultradian Cycle) run in 90-minute periods. Explore programming your day around this natural patterns and remember to include periods of rest as part of that 90-minute cycle.
  • Your physical energy is maintained through a steady dose of fuel. Try out different foods to see what keeps your physical and mental energy on an even keel during the day.

Have fun learning about your personal energy. You’ll make all kind of interesting discoveries that will carry you through the week.
